Beginning Band

Open to 6th, 7th , and 8th-grade students. Students learn to play a band instrument during this year-long course.  They perform in a winter and spring concert, as well as one adjudicated concert band festival in the spring.

Advanced Band – open to 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students who already know how to play a band instrument.  Students perform in a variety of events, including a winter and spring concert; “Spartan” pep rallies and school assemblies; our annual arts Gala; and at least two adjudicated festivals.  The group generally travels on a “spring tour” to destinations such as San Diego, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, NV.

Jazz Band

Open to 6th, 7th, and 8h-grade students (by audition) who exhibit advanced level skills on their instrument. The group emphasis is on jazz style, improvisation, and sight-reading.  Students perform in all of the Advanced Band performances, as well as at least 3 adjudicated jazz band festivals.

Marching Band

Open to 7th and 8th-grade students who already know how to play a band instrument. Students practice during summer vacation in preparation for the fall marching season, in which they perform in 5 competitions with bands from all over Southern California.  This group consists of students from all of the advanced bands.  The students also work toward the “Presidential Physical Fitness” award.

Color Guard

Open to 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students (by audition). The color guard performs with the marching band in its competition parades, as well as a spring season of color guard “indoor” competitions.

Drum Line

Open to 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students (by audition) who exhibit advanced skill on percussion instruments. The drum line performs with the marching band in its competition parades, as well as a spring season of drum line “indoor” competitions.

The 2011-12 school year was the first year that West Middle School formed the Marching Band, Color Guard, and Drum Line Ensembles.  The Jazz Program is in its second year, and the Beginning Band and Advanced Band have been competing during the past 5 years under the direction of Mr. Miller.

2011 – 2012 Competition Season Results…

Beginning Band –  Excellent Rating at the Bellflower High School concert festival.

Advanced Band –  Excellent Rating at the Downey West concert festival; Superior rating at the Bellflower High School concert festival.

Jazz Band – 1st- place at the Mayfair High School jazz festival; 3rd place at the South Hills High School jazz festival.

Marching Band – 3rd place at the Placentia Band Review; 2nd place at the Loara Band

Drum Line –  2nd place at the Fontana High School competition; 5th place at the Marina High School competition; and 11th place at Kaiser High School drum line finals.

Color guard – will begin competing with the marching band in the fall of 2012.
