Learning to Look at Art Through the Elements and Principles of Design.

Art and Design Projects

The art and design projects that students create in this class are  based on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design as well as the State and National Content Standards for the Visual Arts.  These projects are supported by historical and cultural art themes studied and thoroughly discussed in class to add connection to themes and relative aesthetic valuing.

The fiber form sculpture is an obvious example of how all of the class components fit together. The fiber form sculpture, made from fiber rush and natural raffia was influenced by many ancient cultures of the world including Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Asia and the Middle East; with the earliest known examples to be over 10,000 years old. The type of weaving technique used by the students (called “coiling”) was used extensively by the Native American Pomo tribe of central California.

Together with the use of the Elements and Principles, historical and cultural concepts, vocabulary, art criticism, technical skills and aesthetic valuing, students were able to create a sculptural form containing texture, shape, line, pattern, rhythm, movement unity, harmony and balance. These beautiful works of art amazed me and impressed other students and fellow colleagues. When given the opportunity and tools, our kids are capable of amazing artistic achievements.
