General Information

  1. Red Substitute Folder: on the white bookcase on the wall next to teacher desk see the wire rack that holds the folder.
    .

  2. Student Accountability: My students do a nice, polite job with me, so they can do a great job with you.  I expect you to have a nice day. Just let students know that you will be giving them a class grade for their cooperation, time on task, and academic effort. Leave individual names for any who deserve a bad grade for sleeping or going off task.  Please keep track of tardies as well. Refer to the vice principal anyone who insists on disrupting another student's learning.  (You will find referral and detention forms in the red substitute folder.) Similarly, do not allow students to be defiant. Reading, taking notes and writing assignments make up 37% of their grades, so they have every reason to be serious when I am away.

  3. Please be sure to lock the doors whenever you leave the room as students should never have access to the room without supervision.  The AC and heater are automatic, but must be activated every three hours.  To activate the system, see the silver box just to the left of the handout rack that is attached to the wall behind the teacher chair.  The switch is on the bottom.  Press the switch and hold for 3 seconds.  That should start things.  After two hours you will need to repeat the process.

Emergency Lesson Plans:

  1. A quick emergency lesson can always involve the reading of a story from the gold, 11th grade literature book beneath the desks.   If I can, even in an emergency, I'll call in with a specific lesson suggestion or add a lesson link to my web site.  Find my website here: http://warren.dusd.net/~dstone or just Google me: David Stone Warren High.  See the Emergency Plans link at the top right on the homepage.  Note: currenlty

  2. If you don't have specific plans, make some for yourself.  English classes can always read from the textbook.  Retrieve the book and pick a story for them to read.  Look at the questions / writing assignments at the end of the story and assign them something to keep them busy and productive.  Don't listen to a bunch of fussing—emergencies happen and we all have to carry on sometimes.

The information below has changed:

CD / Tape Player

  1. The CD player is next to the VCR and DVD in the blue cabinet under the TV.  It only plays one CD at a time, so you have to swap CDs for different content, but it is easy to work.
  2. Please note that you cannot open a drawer on the cabinet if one of the other drawers is partly open--typical broken school junk.

DVD Player

  1. The DVD is beneath the VCR in the orange cabinet beneath the TV.  The remote is on top of the VCR.
  2. The TV Video switch on the TV must be toggled to alter the input.  Press on the switch at the bottom with the white dot after you turn on the DVD player (see TV photo below).  You will see the DVD splash screen when you have selected the correct setting. Start the DVD and advance through the tracks as necessary.
  3. The player isn't that complicated, but the remote takes some figuring out.  The best way is to fiddle some while a DVD is running.
  4. Leave a record of where you stop, power the machine down, and shut the cabinet.

Television / VCR Instructions

  1. There is no TV remote, so you will have to make any adjustments for sound by using the switches at the base of the TV.  The volume controls have some little arrows I painted with white-out:  up and down as needed. Power switch is at the bottom right of  the TV.
  2. The VCR remote control is typically on the shelf beneath the stacked components.
  3. Power up the VCR and set the TV to Video 2 using the 2nd switch from the left at the base of the TV.  You have the correct setting when the TV screen turns blue.
  4. Note that when the VCR is left idle for a few minutes, it powers down.  Just press power again.
  5. The VCR remote (Panasonic) has several useful switches.  Display shows the counter.  Set the beginning of a  film to zero.
  6. Please check the counter and write down where each class stops so we can start in the same place the next time class meets.  If I don't provide one, make a simple chart to show where classes stopped and what grade they should receive.
  7. When the class is over, stop the tape, press display and write down the stop time, and then  press Zero/1Min under the Action button.  This will rewind the tape to the zero point.
  8. Please give each class a grade.  Write down the names of students who do a poor job watching the film.  Refer them if they are disruptive.
