About Mr. Stone

Mr. David Stone has been teaching at Warren High School for twenty years and he enjoys working with students in the classroom.  Mr. Stone loves literature, basketball, photography, cinema, computers, working, learning, and creating, and he hopes his students will approach his class with enthusiasm and energy

Born in Long Beach, California, Mr. Stone went to public schools and graduated from R. A. Millikan High School.  After four semesters at Long Beach City College, he worked for several years at a variety of jobs (factory laborer, loan collector, industrial personnel manager) before returning to college.

While at California State University, Long Beach, Mr. Stone majored in English with an emphasis in creative writing and American literature.  After graduation, he completed his teaching credential there also.

Mr. Stone was hired at Warren High in 1989.  Over the years he has taught Remedial 9-12th grade, Creative Writing, 11th ELD, as well as college preparatory and honors 9th and 11th grade English. In his first few years, Mr. Stone spent extra time around John Henning's C-4 computer lab and began to learn more about computers.   Increasingly Mr. Stone sought to integrate

computers into English classrooms as the optimum way to present information and engage learners.  Thanks to the generous support of Dr. Mary Stauffer and Eileen Wannett, Mr. Stone was one of the first teachers in the district to explore and enhance his teaching with multimedia presentation software.

During the summer of 1992, Mr. Stone and his wife began studying for their Masters degree in English at U.C. Irvine.  His wife of twenty-seven years, Ms. Stark, also teaches 11th grade English at Paramount High School.  Graduation day at U.C.I. found them happy, tired, and expecting their first child!  The arrival of a son in 1994 opened up new worlds of experiences and joy for both of them.

The last fifteen years have gone by all too quickly and have been full of changes.  Now living in Irvine, Mr. Stone commutes to Warren High each day while listening to novels.

Like just about everybody, Mr. Stone and his family enjoy traveling.  He counts himself lucky to have had fine times in England, France, Scotland, and New Zealand.  This last summer he spent a few days in Chicago visiting friends, and then spent a week near Mammoth hiking and smiling.

Back at home, Mr. Stone enjoys running and bicycling. When just loafing around he roots for the Lakers, takes photographs, walks his rescue dogs (German shepherds) and likes to eat pizza, watch movies and read books.

He hopes his students all have a wonderful year and can discover in their own lives the pleasures that come from being  dedicated to learning, family, and community.
