It’s Retirement Season Across Downey Unified
Nine teachers and one administrator retire
from across Downey Unified
On Monday, May 1, 2017, the Downey Education Association (DEA) held a retirement celebration for the outgoing members of Downey Unified at the Rio Hondo Event Center. This group of 10 employees is comprised of one administrators and nine teachers. In all, the retiring employees recognized at this celebration represented 229 total years of dedicated service to the students of Downey Unified.
The one administrator who will be retiring in July is Vice Principal Denise Taylor. Taylor has been a part of the Downey Unified family for 23 years and has most recently been an integral part of organizing and assisting the elementary STEAM15 program as well as overseeing the summer STEAMworks program and providing support to the MADE: A Career Initiative division at the district office.
Retiring from the elementary school level are Robyn Applbaum (Rio San Gabriel), Steven Hay (Carpenter) and Elaine Shimoda-Jung (Unsworth). The middle school retirees include, Sally English and Cherry Marks, both from Griffiths.
Lastly, retiring from the high school level are Robinson English (Warren), Janet Crow (Downey), Anthony Mendez (Downey) and Brooks Sharp (Downey).

Sodetani. “Each of you has had a positive effect on childrens’ lives and you are the reasons why Downey Unified is such an amazing district.”
