TARDY POLICY

TARDY POLICY

REVISED   1- 9 – 13

HOMEROOM TARDIES:  Homeroom tardies are tardies to school.  Students are required to be in class, in their seats or at their work station, and ready to work when the bell rings.  Students less than 10 minutes late to school are to report directly to their homeroom class.  Late students are not to check in through the office unless they arrive after 8:05 a.m.  Students arriving after 8:05 a.m. must report first to the attendance office and will be assigned Lunch Exclusion for the same day unless the tardy is excused.   All homeroom tardies should be recorded in Q.   It is the student’s responsibility to clear first period tardies with a note signed by a parent or guardian, or a parent phone call.  All notes or phone messages regarding student attendance should include the students I.D. number.  Please make sure the student’s I.D. number is written on the note and forward all notes to the office or keep them in your records for future reference should it become necessary.

We will accept a maximum of three (3) notes from parents per semester to excuse tardiness to homeroom.  Up to three (3) tardies to school with a note signed by a parent or guardian will be considered excused tardies.  Excused tardies should still be recorded in Q.  Students should not receive lunch exclusion, detention or referral to the office for excused tardies.

Tardies without a note will be considered unexcused tardies.  Also, after three (3) excused tardies (with parent notes) all subsequent tardies will be considered unexcused, regardless of whether or not a note is turned in.  Unexcused tardies of less than 10 minutes should be assigned lunch exclusion for the same day.  A fourth unexcused tardy to homeroom (which conceivably could be the student’s seventh tardy if they have brought three notes previously) should result in a referral to the office.  Be sure to list on the referral the dates of the tardies and the dates when parent notes were received.  Continue to assign a lunch exclusion and send the student to the office with a referral for each tardy to home room thereafter.  All students get a fresh start at the semester — please begin a new tally.

PERIOD TARDIES:  Period tardies are tardies to class (excluding homeroom).  Adequate time is provided between class periods to pass from room to room.  Students are required to be in class, in their seats or at their work station, and ready to work when the bell rings.  Students missing less than 15 minutes of a period will be considered tardy.  All period tardies should be recorded in Web Tools.  Students should not be counted as tardy if they arrive late with a pass or note from another staff member.  If you accept a note from another staff member to excuse a tardy, please clear the tardy in Web Tools.

Students who arrive late to class without a note should receive a teacher detention or some other in-class penalty.  Lunch exclusion is for homeroom tardies only.  Do not assign lunch exclusion for period tardies.  On a student’s fourth tardy to a given period they should receive a referral to the office.  Make sure you list the dates of the four tardies on the referral.  Continue to send the student to the office with a referral for each tardy thereafter.  All students get a fresh start at the semester.

Students missing more than 15 minutes of a period will be considered absent and truant for that period.   Being more that 15 minutes late to class constitutes a truancy on campus and should be referred to the office.  Truancy on campus may result in Saturday School and a juvenile citation with a fine of up to $675.
