October 2019 Principal’s Message

Principal’s Message

Dear parents, guardians, and friends of Griffiths Middle School,

Griffiths Middle School is off to great start. As I walk through the classrooms I can’t help but be proud of all the student engagement and learning going on.

Our school’s vision statement, “Griffiths Middle School students will acquire 21st Century skills, be college and career ready, globally competitive, and citizens of strong character”, not only focuses on our students’ academic successes, but on our students’ character as well. This month will highlight the Six Pillars of Character during our Character Counts! Week, October 21-25 as well as other social emotional learning programs we offer.  Although we try to embody the pillars throughout the year, we take time during this week to reinforce what each of the six pillars means. During the month of October, we will be offering two Parent Education workshops highlighting Learning Together, our student strengths based learning program.  This program seeks to identify the strengths each student possesses and maximize their true full potential.  These workshops will take place on October 1st at 8am and Wednesday October 2nd at 6:30pm.

We invite you to our next Parent Academy on October 1st at 8:00 a.m. and October 2ndth at 6:30 p.m. to learn more about Learning Together and student strengths education.

If your student has not had an opportunity to attend one of our STEAM Saturdays, please enroll her/him for the sessions on October 12th and 26th.  STEAM Saturdays allow students to take classes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.  Our first September STEAM Saturdays were extremely successful in giving students an opportunity for enrichment. In this and the coming months, we will be offering Computer/Gaming 101, Media/Journalism, Mentoring and more!

In closing, I want to take a moment to share my reflection on my short time here at Griffiths.  As many of you know I have spent many of my years in education in high school.  As a professional, being back at the middle school level has reinvigorated me in the belief that success starts at the elementary level and is continued at the middle school.  Spending time working with our GMS students is not only helping them grow but also myself.  I am so excited every day knowing I have the privilege to watch them learn, grow and treat each other with dignity and respect as they navigate the halls.  Griffiths is where successful students are made.  I humbly thank you for entrusting us with that task and promise to give our best every day to prepare your student.

Anthony Zegarra, Ed.D.
