September 2019 Principal’s Message

Principal’s Message

Dear parents, guardians, and friends of Griffiths Middle School,

We have had a great start to our new school year. Our students have already been busy with the many activities going on at GMS. Our school continues to implement PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) to create a positive school culture. School expectations were communicated to students at our Welcome Back Assemblies, and our PBIS program was introduced to our new students. A big part of PBIS is recognizing students for their positive choices on campus. To recognize and reward positive behaviors, our staff will be giving out points on an app called PBIS Rewards. Every Wednesday students can cash in their points at the Griffiths Character Counts! Store for Griffiths gear or classroom teacher incentives, such as homework passes and being able to choose their seat for the day. We hope to continue to positively motivate our students and remind them that their character counts every day!

I would like to thank all the parents who visited us during back to school night September 5th. It was a very successful evening and it was especially wonderful to meet many of our parents.

September is Attendance Awareness Month. A good attendance record is another predictor of student success. I want to congratulate our students and thank our parents for our excellent attendance rate. Last year, we ended the school year with a 96.57% average attendance rate. Our attendance goal this year is to improve our Average Daily Attendance (ADA) by one percent.

To meet our goal, we will need your help. Please be sure to take vacations or family trips during the school’s regular holidays and breaks. Also, please schedule doctor and other appointments after school hours. If this is not possible, please make every attempt to have your student attend at least part of the school day. Also, if your child is sick and staying home from school, please make sure to call our attendance line, (562) 904-3580, and press #2 to report the absence and avoid truancy on his/her attendance record. When students are not in school, they may be able to make-up an assignment, but they cannot make-up the missed instructional time by a fully credentialed teacher at GMS. Also, please establish routines at home that ensure your child arrives at school on time. Please help us in developing positive attendance patterns for all students. We will continue our attendance recovery program at Griffiths this year. Students who have an absence should make up an absence by attending a four-hour program on a Saturday at “Steam Saturday.” Our first Steam Saturday will be on Saturday, September 14th. Thank you for your help and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Anthony Zegarra, Ed.D. Principal
