January 2019 Principal’s Message

Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of Griffiths Middle School,

I hope you all had wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year! There are many wonderful activities going on in 2019 at Griffiths Middle School. Make sure you stay connected to our school by updating your information in the front office.

Your student will be coming home with their report card on January 9th in addition to their My Progress Reflection Form completed in their Griffiths Guide on P. 22. Please ask your student about their goals for this upcoming grading period. We have also added a Character Counts! goal for our students. Please refer to the My Progress Reflection Form to see what your student’s goal is for the pillar of Responsibility.

We have a few reminders for the new year. Please know that your student’s safety is our top priority. The end of the school day is a very busy time with clubs, sports, tutoring, Aspire, and other activities. If your child is involved in any after-school activities, please remind them that they need to get to their assigned area right away. For the safety of our students, we will begin closing the Horley & Lubec gates 30 minutes after dismissal. Any remaining students that have not been picked up will go to the front of the administration office to wait. Please make sure to pick up your student(s) promptly. If your student is walking home, please remind them to walk in groups and to be aware of their surroundings as they walk.

I want to congratulate our students for continuing to have the best attendance out of the four middle schools in Downey. Please remember, students should be on campus no later than 7:45 am daily. This helps to ensure students are on campus when the first bell rings at 7:50 so that they have ample time to make it into class and not be tardy. Excessive tardiness (3 or more per semester) result in Wednesday after-school detention. Absences can be recovered by attending the STEAM Saturdays throughout the rest of the year. Thank you for your continued support.

We have some exciting parent education opportunities coming up this year. Starting in January, we will be having a session on The Road to High School and Beyond. This session will be led by one of our GMS counselors. More information will be sent to parents in the next week. I hope you can join us.

Please refer to the important dates emailed home with this newsletter. We included End of the Year Dates as well for you to mark on your calendars.

Rani Bertsch, Ed.D.
