March 2018 Principal’s Newsletter-English

Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of Griffiths Middle School,

I would like to once again congratulate Griffiths Middle School for receiving the California and National Schools to Watch Award. There will be an assembly on March 9th at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate this distinguished achievement. All parents are welcome to attend. Our staff and students have worked very hard to demonstrate strong student achievement. This ceremony is an affirmation of the great work our school, district and larger community has done. Griffiths Middle School is one of just of 112 model schools that have been identified statewide since 2003. We are asking students to wear their GMS Griffiths gear on that day. Please click on the link to the article in the Downey Patriot.

I am really proud to report that our attendance rate at GMS continues to improve. A good attendance record is another predictor of student success. Last year, we ended the school year with a 96.38 % attendance rate. This year, our attendance goal is to improve our Average Daily Attendance (ADA) by one percent.  To meet our goal, we will need your help.  Please be sure to take vacations or family trips during the school’s regular holidays and breaks.  Also, please schedule doctor and other appointments after school hours.  If this is not possible, please make every attempt to have your child attend at least part of the school day.  Also, if your child is home sick, please make sure you call our attendance line, (562) 904-3580 and press #2 to clear your child’s absence and avoid truancy on his/her attendance record. Also, please establish routines at home that ensure your child arrives to school on time.  Please help us in developing positive attendance patterns for all students.  When children are not in school, they may be able to make-up an assignment, but they cannot make-up the time missed from instruction by a fully credentialed teacher. We will continue our attendance recovery program at Griffiths this year. Students who have an absence will have the opportunity to make up that absence by attending a 4-hour Saturday program.  Our next Saturday School will be on Saturday, March 3, 2018. Thank you for your help and cooperation.

As you can see, our school has much of which to be proud. Our students are excelling in many areas. Thank you again for all your continued support. Please see below for upcoming events.
