October 2017 Principal’s Letter English

Principal’s Message

Dear parents, guardians, and friends of Griffiths Middle School,

Griffiths Middle School is off to an incredible year. As you walk through the classrooms, you can’t help but feel energized by all the teaching and learning that is taking place. We recently celebrated Critical Thinking Week. Critical Thinking Through Writing is our Instructional Focus at GMS. During this week, students were exposed to multiple activities relating to Critical Thinking. It is our goal at GMS to increase critical thinking in our students and have them articulate their thinking through writing.

Our school’s vision statement: Griffiths Middle School students will acquire 21st Century skills, be college and career ready, globally competitive, and citizens of strong character, not only focuses on our students’ academic successes, but on our students’ character as well. This month will be highlighting the Six Pillars of Character during our Character Counts! Week, October 16-21. Although we try to embody the pillars throughout the year, we take time during this week to reinforce what each of the six pillars means. The Six Pillars of Character is a framework for teaching good character and is composed of six ethical values (characteristics) everyone can agree upon: Trustworthiness; Respect; Responsibility; Fairness; Caring; and Citizenship. Each of the six character traits are used within the CC! program to help instill a positive learning environment for students and a “culture of kindness” making schools a safe environment for students to learn. CC! fosters a positive environment that has been shown to improve overall attendance and test scores while reducing negative incidents such as bullying and discipline referrals.

If your student has not had an opportunity to attend one of our STEAM Saturdays, please enroll him/her for the session on October 21st.  STEAM Saturdays allow students to take classes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.  Our first September STEAM Saturday was extremely successful in giving students an opportunity for enrichment. This month, we will be offering art, woodworking and others.  We also hope to see more parents attend our Parent Academies. Our parents who attend parent education receive information that will directly benefit their students’ academic success and well-being. Please sign-up for our next session on October 4th on Health and Wellness at 8:00 a.m. in our school library.. October 4th is also Walk To School Day so please take some time that morning and walk with your kids to school.

Thank you again for all the support you give your child at home to reinforce the skills that our students need to succeed.

Rani Bertsch, Ed.D.
