TK Dual Language Prep
Our Transitional Kindergarten Dual Language Prep will offer an exciting educational opportunity for children who turn five between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2. Our program will include an emphasis on oral language development, literacy immersion, number sense, and it provides collaborative experiences that promote cooperation, self-confidence, self-regulation and healthy attitudes about school and learning. A unique part of our program will include Spanish language development throughout the day to build the necessary skills to transition into our primary grades in our Global Language Academies of Downey.
Kindergarten – Global Education Program
The Global Language Academy of Downey’s unique kindergarten program offers students a comprehensive curriculum that nurtures independent learning skills by encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning through an inquiry-led method. This exciting approach to instruction also incorporates local and global issues into the curriculum by affording the opportunity for students to learn beyond solely in their native language. G.L.A.D. offers an option for a dual-language program for students that will provide tremendous benefits during their earlier formative years, furthering their progression and abilities in both English and Spanish.
What is a dual language program?
Our Global Language Academies of Downey Dual Language Immersion Program will follow a unique, and exciting educational model where children learn to think, read, write and communicate naturally in both English and Spanish. Native Spanish and native English speaking students study together, beginning in kindergarten through 5th grade, to be biliterate in both languages. The goal of the program is to empower students to achieve high levels of academic success and develop the cross-cultural skills needed to be college and career ready for success in a global economy.
Our program will follow a 90/10 model, which means that Spanish will be taught most of the day in the primary grades (80-90%). Our goal is for each class to be made up of 50% native English speakers and 50% native Spanish speakers. To ensure we keep this balance, students must apply and undergo a free assessment as part of the selection process.
How will it benefit my child?
|Learning a second language stimulates the brain to develop higher level reasoning skills, which transfer to complex critical thinking in math, science, and language arts.|
|Children who are educated in two languages have stronger self-esteem with more tolerance for, and more interest in, other cultures.|
|Students acquire a sense of respect for different cultures and the world.|
If you are interested in learning more about our program, please attend one of the following Parent Informational Meetings. Afternoon childcare and translation are available.
All Meetings held at our District Office | 11627 Brookshire Ave. Downey, CA 90241
How will immersing English speakers into a two-way bilingual program affect their abilities in their native language?
How will students who speak only English be able to learn effectively when they are instructed for up to 90% of the day in a language they don't understand?
What is the Family Commitment?
Because of this extended amount of time required in order to develop language mastery, we ask that parents agree to commit to our five-year elementary school program. Once students reach second grade, it is far more challenging for students to be able to successfully manage the transition into our dual-language immersion program (unless they are transferring from another DLI program).
What are the next steps?
We will mail letters of acceptance or regret to parents in March. Parents of students who have been accepted will need to attend a Commitment Meeting in which they will learn more about curriculum and instruction and confirm their children’s participation.
Parents must complete and submit enrollment forms to ensure their children are enrolled in our school. The application does not contain all of the information necessary to be enrolled. Inter District Transfer (transferring into DUSD from another district) must begin and then transfer process most be completed with your child’s home school district. Once the home district approves the transfer, it is then brought to DUSD. If there are any issues with being released from your home district, please contact us. If a transfer student is not accepted into the program, we guarantee a spot at one of our other DUSD elementary schools campuses.
