January Award Recipients

Congratulations Carol Ozima and Tanya Bishop

Shared Values Award for Best Staff and High Standards

On January 15, 2019, Carol Ozima and Tanya Bishop were recognized by the Board of Education with a Shared Values Award in the area Best Staff and High Standards. Recognized for their character and consistently modeling a passion for education, these two Elementary ELA TOSAs (Teacher on Special Assignment) support all 13 Downey Unified elementary schools, TK-5th grade, in the area of Balanced Literacy. Ms. Ozima and Ms. Bishop have modeled and/or taught hundreds of lessons in classrooms to support and educate teachers as well as have provided professional learning and support for administrators and staff. Congratulations Alameda Tiger Cafe

Shared Values Award for Positive School Culture

Also recognized in January, was Alameda Elementary School’s Tiger Café staff for receiving a Shared Values Award in the area of Positive School Culture. These dedicated Tigers, which include Luisa Rojo, Manager; Maria Flores, Becky Madrid, and Carolina Ramirez, were selected for this award for promoting mutual respect within their community so students can grow academically and develop as responsible citizens. Mrs. Rojo leads the cafeteria staff to prepare and serve more than just a nutritious, delicious lunch, she believes in students being well-informed and independent in their food choices. Mrs. Rojo and her staff model inclusivity in the Alameda cafeteria with the utmost respect. November Award Recipients

Congratulations Johnny Zegarra

Shared Values Award for Teaching and Learning

Johnny Zegarra, Warren High School’s Culinary Arts teacher, was honored by the Downey Unified Board of Education on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, with the Shared Values Award in the area of Teaching and Learning. This incredible Bear was presented this award for engaging and motivating students in learning, using a rigorous and relevant curriculum based on principles of 21st Century Learning. Thank you Mr. Zegarra for all you do for our students! October Award Recipients

Thank you to Patrick Weyland and Lazy Dog Restaurant

Shared Values Award for Building Relationships

On October 16, 2018, Patrick Weyland, General Manager of Lazy Dog Restaurant in Downey, was recognized by the Board of Education with the Shared Values Award in the area Relationships and Partnerships. Mr. Weyland was recognized for his partnership with Downey Unified which optimizes opportunities for learning and personal growth for students. Lazy Dog Restaurant in Downey has donated approximately $80,000 in gift certificates which are used as student incentives at many Downey Unified schools. Mr. Weyland is seen in the photo with his wife and children, as well as Superintendent Dr. Garcia, DEA President Jim Mogan and Board of Education President Bobbie Samperi.
