Cognitively Guided Instruction Year 2 Institute
This institute is designed for K-5 teachers and administrators who wish to deepen their understanding of Cognitively Guided Instruction to teach mathematics. We will examine and discuss the development of children’s mathematical thinking and build upon students’ ideas to best support the learning of math in our classrooms (Carpenter, Fennema, Franke, Levi, & Empson, 2015). The goal of CGI is to foster students’ development as problem solvers who bring skill and confidence to mathematics situations. This professional learning opportunity will help participants elicit children’s mathematical thinking and use it as the basis for instructional decisions. This professional learning opportunity is designed for teachers who have previous experience in learning about children’s thinking and attempting to take up these ideas in their teaching practice.
