The 1st Annual 5K Run/Walk was largely attended on April 13, 2013 at Rancho Los Amigos. Over 1000 participants, sponsors, vendors and volunteers came out to support this great event to benefit Downey Unified’s TLC Family Resource Center. Major sponsors included: Kaiser Permanente, Downey Kiwanis Club, Care1st, Supervisor Don Knabe’s office and The Eleanor Kehoe Eck Trust to name a few.
Children in strollers, veteran runners and those in wheelchairs could all be seen traveling the 5K path with determination. Many competitive teams within Downey Unified School District were created and groups throughout the city formed their own teams. The sense of community spirit was evident by all of the support TLC received as this 5K fundraiser brought in over $20,000!
Congratulations go to the top 3 runners of the race: Carlos Lopez, Michael Guzman and Tommy Odom. Full race results are available on the TLC website which is www.dusd.net/tlc.
Funds raised will directly benefit eligible students, who are either uninsured or underinsured, with detrimental health services at no cost. Once students are screened for a health insurance program, they may be able to participate in programs such as mental health, medical and/or vision services at the Center.
TLC exists solely on grants and donations from the community. For more information about the TLC program, contact (562) 904-3577.
