New Superintendent Selected

To the Downey Unified School District Community:

On behalf of the Board of Education, I am pleased to announce the selection of Dr. John Garcia as the Superintendent of the Downey Unified School District, effective Monday, April 1, 2013.

The Board is extremely pleased that Dr. Garcia is quite literally coming home to Downey.  Dr. Garcia is a product of the Downey Unified School District, having attended Carpenter Elementary School, South (now Sussman) Middle School and is a 1985 graduate of Downey High School.

Dr. Garcia received his bachelors degree from California State University, Long Beach; his elementary teaching credential with a BCLAD in Spanish from California State University, Dominguez Hills; a masters degree in education from California State University, Fullerton and an Executive Masters of Business Administration and his Doctor of Philosophy from the Claremont Graduate University.

He began his career as a 5th grade teacher in the Inglewood Unified School District and then taught 4th grade in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District.   He served as a middle school assistant principal and elementary school principal in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District.  He was both a middle school and high school principal in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.  He then moved to the Glendale Unified School District where he served for three years as the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources (certificated personnel) and as Classified Personnel Director for the Personnel Commission.  For the last three years, Dr. Garcia has been Deputy Superintendent for Educational Services in Glendale.

The Board expects to approve a formal employment contract at the regular Board meeting on Tuesday, February 19.  The Board and Dr. Garcia are working on details of the contract.  The Board plans to bring Dr. Garcia to Downey Unified to work as soon as possible as Superintendent Designate to allow him to visit schools and to meet with employees and the community before he formally becomes Superintendent.

The Board appreciates the input we received from many employees, members of the community and our employee organizations over the course of the search.  All of the input was carefully considered as the Board made its decisions during the search.

Finally, the Board wants to thank Dr. Wendy Doty for her decade of service as Superintendent and her over 30 years of work here in the Downey Unified School District.  All of us are tremendously indebted to Dr. Doty for her steady leadership of the District during the trying economic times we have all faced together for the last few years.

On behalf of the Board of Education

Donald E. LaPlante, President
